One of the biggest downsides to moving is allllll of the boxes, paper, and waste associated with it. However, it’s not as difficult to go green as you may think. We’re here to share some of our favorite eco-friendly moving tips.

Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle

If you’ve ever moved, you understand how much STUFF goes into securely transporting your belongings. However, there are ways to reduce your impact on the environment.

Reduce – For short DIY moves, heavy duty plastic totes are often a great alternative to cardboard boxes. You can also reduce the amount of waste by using what you already have. Pack sheets, towels, and other non-breakable items into suitcases, duffles, and storage pieces.

Reuse – Like we mentioned above, plastic totes are 100% reusable! You should also check out this great post on DIY crafts that reuse your old cardboard boxes. We’re pretty sure the super crafty people out there refer to it as “upcycling.”

Recycle – Coordinate with your local recycling facility to determine items they will take. Also, many charities are in need of boxes frequently. You can also post your items on services like Craigslist.

Donations

We’ve talked about donating items previously, but we can’t tell you enough how important this is. There are many charities who accept donations of all kinds, from clothes to kitchen appliances. Instead of throwing away items, first try to find a non-profit who could benefit from your old belongings.

Greener Cleaning

While nothing kills bacteria like bleach, our grandparents and great-grandparents had a few good natural cleaning tips up their sleeves. Natural products such as vinegar, baking soda, Borax, and lemon juice can be just as effective in cleaning your place as chemical products. Check out this handy list of “recipes” to get you started!

Go Minimalist

One of the best ways to start fresh is to move. Use your move as an opportunity to declutter…and make a goal not to clutter again! Once you’ve donated or recycled old belongings, choose to live a more minimal lifestyle to prevent the buildup from occurring again. Some tips for doing this include:

  • Only buy what you need (don’t collect canned goods, spices, candles, etc.)
  • Purchase reusable items (hand towels instead of paper towels, dishes instead of paper plates, etc.)
  • If you can make it or grow it yourself, do that!
