Moving into a new place is a great reason to throw a party! Luckily enough, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday this year. Whether you’re looking for a big fiesta or a small gathering, we’re sharing some of our favorite Cinco de Mayo party ideas to get you in the spirit.
But First…A Little History
Surprisingly enough, many people believe that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. However, this is incorrect! Historically, the holiday was used to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla. More recently, Cinco de Mayo is seen as a celebration of the Mexican culture in America. In fact, Mexico does not even observe the day as a national holiday.
It’s Not A Party Without Food
Dishes flavored with chiles, cumin, oregano, onion, cinnamon, and cocoa are common in traditional Mexican cooking. Authentic homemade tortillas and certain salsas (sauces) can take a long time to make. However, here are a few recipes to make at home easily enough to feed a crowd:
Stacked Enchiladas – Though these aren’t the customary rolled or flat Sonoran enchiladas, this casserole-style dish combines traditional flavors and saves you time putting it all together.
Slow Cooker Salsa Chicken – Feed a crowd and stay hands-off with this easy recipe. When it’s done, shred the chicken and use for nachos or tacos. It’s a crowd pleaser!
Baked Churros – Avoid the added fat and calories of frying by baking these traditional Mexican desserts. These take a little time, so plan ahead. However, the result is worth it.
Add Some Decor
Mexican decor is bright and festive. Choose vibrant colors such as turquoise, hot pink, yellow, red, green, and orange. Tissue paper flowers and piñatas are also traditional Cinco de Mayo decorations.
Don’t Forget The Neighbors
Cinco de Mayo is the perfect time to invite over new neighbors! If you haven’t met them yet, print out some invitations to ask neighbors to join in the celebration. If you already know your neighbors, ask if they would like to have a potluck where everyone brings a little something. It can save you time (and a little money).
We wish everyone a very happy Cinco de Mayo. We will happily show up for any celebrations! If you need help getting moved into your next house before the next holiday, contact Brothers for a complimentary quote.
