Moving can be a stressful time for people who are highly organized. The time between homes is rough, as items are split between two places, and possibly even storage. That’s why it’s best, in most cases, to keep items in storage that do not necessarily need to be in either place, meaning they can be easily located in a single storage unit that serves as a median.
Knowing which items need to placed in storage can be the biggest question, so let’s take a look at some of the most common and appropriate items to put in storage during a move:
- Seasonal items – This decor or clothing is only needed for a certain season or month of the year, so it’s best to get this out of the way until needed or until you’re fully moved into your new space.
- Furniture that doesn’t have a space yet – You may not always know exactly what’s necessary in your new space, but it’s important to keep items even if you don’t know how they fit in yet. Once everything has settled, you can determine whether these items do have a home or if they need to be donated or sold.
- Antiques or memorabilia – Much like with furniture, you may not know exactly where these items fit into your new space. That definitely doesn’t mean you should throw them out! Keep these types of items in storage until you’re settled into your new place, then find a spot that best displays them.
- Items of value – Whether these items are of sentimental or monetary value, you’ll want to make sure you don’t leave them behind in the transfer. Putting them into storage guarantees that you know exactly where they are when you need them. Don’t forget to purchase storage insurance!
No matter what type of item it is, make certain that it is packed adequately and that your storage unit is organized with items you’re most likely to need first up front, while items that you won’t need for a long time are placed in back. Also, make sure that fragile items are wrapped carefully, and placed in a spot where they aren’t susceptible to breaking!
