Pets are definitely a part of our extended families. For most people, the process of moving is stressful and busy. However, it takes an even bigger toll on your furry friends. We’re here with some tips on how to make moving with pets a little bit easier.
Meet With Your Vet
Ensure that your animals are up-to-date on all of their vaccinations. During this appointment, you should also discuss refilling daily medications ahead of time. Additionally, many pets have anxiety about traveling in the car or get carsick. Ask your vet about a mild sedative or feeding options that may make the trip a little easier (not to mention more pleasant) for everyone.
Pack Your Pets Their Own “Suitcase”
Just like you wouldn’t want your toothbrush or fresh clothes packed up in a box, be sure to set aside your pet’s necessities. This can include medications, food, water bowls, leashes and collars, portable kennels, and perhaps a favorite toy or blanket.
Keep Them Safe
On moving day, it’s important to make sure that your pets are safely away from the hustle and bustle. Many pets are lost during moves due to doors or gates being left open accidentally. You can ensure your pets’ safety by:
- setting up temporary boarding at your local vet or animal daycare.
- asking a trusted friend or relative to watch your pets during your move (this is helpful for local moves).
- acquiring enclosures for your furry friends, set up in a quieter part of the house.
Long Distance Travel Recommendations
If you are moving a long distance away from your current home, it’s important to make sure that your temporary accommodations are pet-friendly. Websites like BringFido or PetsWelcome can you help to identify any motels that allow pets.
Also, be sure to stop frequently for water and walking breaks (for dogs). This can help ease your pets’ anxiety about the trip. It’s also common for animals to refuse water during times of stress, so it’s important to offer it often. You don’t want them to become dehydrated.
Most Importantly: THE TAG & MICROCHIP
In case your animal does get lost during your move, having updated collar tags and microchips can assist with their safe return. Do not leave your home without making sure each of your pets has on a collar with updated information and is microchipped.
