It’s never easy to move to a new place. Even if you’re over the moon about the change, moving means plenty of planning, packing, and organization to make sure the transition goes smoothly. Here’s some of our best advice for how to prepare yourself.

1. Draw Up A Budget

Moving costs money. If you know you need to move, your first step is figuring out what you can afford to spend on packing and moving services, boxes, and other moving supplies. Request a quote from local moving companies so you can get a sense of your expenses. The price will vary based on the time of year, day of the month, square footage of your current home, and amount of furniture you have. Take those factors into consideration when figuring out your budget. You might be able to save by moving on a weekday, or in the middle of the month rather than at the beginning or the end, when most new leases start.

2. Find Your Movers

Assuming you don’t want to haul all your heavy possessions and fragile wine glasses back and forth by yourself, you’ll want to book your moving company early. During peak times of the year, like over the summer or near September 1, when many leases begin and end, moving companies’ calendars fill up fast. Book at least 8 weeks in advance for the best prices and to ensure you get your preferred date and time. Before signing any forms, do your research on the company’s ratings and make sure that they’re licensed and insured.

3. De-clutter Your Home

There’s no time like moving to remind you of all the possessions you’ve accumulated over the years. Now’s the time to sort through everything you own and ask yourself what you really need and use. If you don’t use it, don’t move it! Consider donating unwanted clothes, books, and furniture in good condition to local thrift shops or charities.

4. Start Packing (and Packing)

Packing is the most time-consuming part of a move. Write down an inventory of any valuable items so you don’t lose track of them. Label your boxes by room so you’ll know where everything belongs on moving day, and don’t forget to mark which boxes contain fragile items. Don’t know where to start? Enlist a professional packing service to take care of everything for you and ensure nothing gets scratched, damaged, or broken along the way.

5. Take Care of the Details

Don’t forget the small stuff! Fill out a change-of-address form with the Post Office so you can have any stray mail forwarded to your new address. Update your address with your bank, credit card companies, and any magazine or box subscriptions. Inform utility companies of your move, and set up services at your new address. Last of all, confirm the details of your move with your moving company in the final week before moving day. You don’t want a miscommunication to lead to a last-minute surprise!
