Moving can be overwhelming. There are boxes to pack and items to purge all while working and maybe even raising a family. Before you make the big move, here are some things to think about to make your move easier and even less costly.
1. Create a Calendar to Get Rid of Items. Once you have a moving date, work backwards on your calendar and schedule blocks of time for cleaning and tossing. Pick an area of the house or even just a closet to work. This will make the overwhelming task more manageable.

2. Eat What You Have in the Kitchen. Make a conscious effort to stop buying food and prepare meals with what you have available. This will not only save you money on your food bill but if you were planning on taking your dry goods with you, it will save on moving costs.

3. Recycle Clothes. If you find that you have clothes that just won’t make the move, consider donating or recycling your clothes. You can either bring them to your local charity, schedule a pick up or consider reselling your clothes for consignment.

4. Order Bulk Trash Pickup. To avoid incurring any charges to your security deposit for items left behind, order a bulk trash pickup. Many local trash companies will do this for free.

5. Take Pictures. Be sure to take pictures of electronics to remember where cords are connected and have documentation of valuable items in case they are misplaced, broken or damaged during the move. Another great reason to take pictures is to help remember what is in a box. Before you shut the box, snap a picture. You can keep them on your phone so you know what is in each one before you open it.

6. Number and Label Your Boxes. Many people label their boxes with the contents but numbering your boxes will help you remember which of the kitchen boxes is most important to unpack first. This way you will unload your household dishes first and save your holiday dishes for another time.

7. Place Liquids Together. To avoid damage to other items, place your liquids together. You may also want to consider putting smaller liquids inside a Zip-Loc bag and larger liquids inside plastic garbage bags.

8. Use Suitcases for Your Daily Items. Pack your suitcase like you are going on a week-long trip. This will help you get up and running the next day instead of having to immediately start unpacking boxes when you arrive at your new home.

9. Ask for Help with Pets and Kids. Moving day can be hectic, stressful and emotional. Try and get help watching your kids and pet that day. If you can’t find help, schedule for your pets to be boarded and enlist the help of your kids on this day. Maybe they can be in charge of the lemon stand on the lawn.

10. Consider Your Moving Date. Most people tend to move during the summer months, May to September. If you can move during another time of the year, you can save considerable costs. Another cost saving measure it to plan your move for the middle of the month since most leases start at the beginning of a month. Finally, scheduling your move for during the week will also save you cash.
